Answers On A Postcard, Please

What is art…and how can you tell the good from the bad? Well, I’m glad I asked but I haven’t a clue about the answer. It’s like asking what punk is, there’s no straight answer. We all have our own ideas of what art means to us – very different ideas.

The first thing 90% of people say to me when they hear I ‘do art’ is, “Oh that must be great, I can’t draw a straight line.” I haven’t had to draw too many straight lines in my life and I’m not sure just how vital that particular skill is. In fact, up until I painted the restored horse-drawn caravan I talked about last time, I had never needed to do anything even resembling a straight line. Yes, I did technical drawings at school but I had a handy little instrument called a ruler to help me with those.

“I can’t draw a straight line.” That conjures up images of school and maybe for a lot of people, that’s the last time they thought about art so when confronted with the notion again, they go right back there as their point of reference. We should think a little bigger though. Art can be anything, absolutely anything and just because you don’t like something, that doesn’t mean it’s not art. It’s just not for you.

Is This Thing On?

FINALLY!

After many months of mulling over the design and changing my mind countless times, my website can at last see the light of day. Here, you can keep up to date with my project work, latest finished pieces and thoughts and ideas. You can also buy stuff from the shop and commission work.

Most of my Christmas holidays has been spent getting all the last minute bits and bobs ready for the site with She Who Cannot Be Done Without, Jolene, the rest of the time was for planning and scheming. There are lots of goals set for 2013 which I’ll share with you as things progress. If even half of them come to fruition it’ll be very exciting. Some of these plans involve Pirate Heart Records, a very cool home for some great rock n’ roll bands. I’ll be helping design some merch for these bands and the Pirate Heart brand itself including T-shirts, album sleeves, posters etc. I’m also working on a series of collectables from the recesses of my dark soul which will be unleashed through Pirate Heart.

I intend to add to my series of rock portraits also. There are so many heroes of mine still to paint so I better get to work. Add to that many more murals (some done with the powerhose), school projects, writing, new albums from the bands I sing in, Setting Off Sirens and Cadaver Club and I can safely say 2013 is more or less covered!

I suppose I should explain briefly why I’ve called my blog “What The Scarecrow Sees”. Well, I’ve always been obsessed with the idea of the scarecrow and for years I’ve felt a kinship with this lonely creature. The scarecrow is the outsider who dutifully stands at his post doing exactly what’s expected of him, year in, year out. He watches the comings and goings of others. He knows he’s missing something important but is afraid to step beyond the boundaries of his own field. Leaving my post has been one of the best decisions of my life and because I’ve been the scarecrow for so long, I really appreciate where I am now and where I’m going.
