“See you in the next cartoon.” That’s what a friend of mine said as he was about to go and live in Australia several years ago and I’ve always thought that’s a whole lot better than goodbye. It’s popped into my mind again these last few weeks as my wife, Jo and myself have taken our first tentative steps into the world of comic cons. We’d been thinking for a while it could be a good way to get my illustrative work out there and actually get talking face to face to other Hallowe’en lovers like ourselves. At the very least, it would be fun, right?
We dipped our toes in the water in the Enniskillen Comic Fest which friends of ours were organising and I painted set pieces for. That led on to Q-Con in Belfast and finally, MCM Comic Con last weekend in Dublin.
Last month saw the launch of Sliabh Beagh Arts Little Mountain exhibition in the Higher Bridges Gallery Enniskillen. I’ve been involved with this group of artists for about five years and I’m pleased to say we’ve carried through on all of the most over the top ideas we’ve come up with.
Some of these include working for six months to stage a shadow puppet show in the middle of a woods for one night only, animating and performing in the same woods two years later (another six months) with our newly written follow up story…for one night only, wood carving, weird and wonderful photography, music workshops, pottery, gate weaving (yes, you read that right) and my own power-hose murals.
I’m sure it’s of no interest to you but I blagged myself some free chicken today just by being nice. Had it in a sandwich. Thought it was worth mentioning…
So anyway, just wanted to say the Easter Art Exhibition in the Higher Bridges Gallery, Enniskillen kicks off next week. My portrait of the great Patrick Moore will be on display this year. I’m really proud of it and glad I did it. I’m sure like countless others, i was left completely deflated when he died and painting him actually helped and made me feel good about the effect he has had on me for all of these years, a feeling that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Thank you Patrick for showing me the stars.
